Helping Others III

And often medical expenses required for a condition are unaffordable, so such people are prevented from achieving what they are capable of for fear of losing such benefits. Such structural problems are rife throughout our community and a greater awareness of TA and the negative impact laws might have in practice. It is always possible to structure laws so as to encourage Adult-Adult behaviour.

After all, it is very obviously possible to encourage games. Unfortunately, lawmakers themselves are involved in games of their own, with covert payoffs.

An Adult-Adult approach is the most useful and therapeutic, as well as less emotionally charged. Those who adopt this approach derive their reward from seeing those who need help return to society as fully-functioning, productive members. If everyone could be made aware of this maladaptive behaviour, perhaps steps could be taken to identify and reduce it. The appropriate portions of our laws would also benefit from a revision to discourage a culture of dependency and give aid better suited to the person’s needs.

Generally our society is pervaded with maladaptive structures. That it succeeds so well compared to many other societies shows that generally the structures are good. A review of the whole fabric of society would be a tremendous undertaking and would need to come from a growing awareness by the members of society as to what benefits are conferred by appropriate behaviours. It is possible that this will happen with evolving awareness and the future approach to regulation might become very different.

Perhaps a good first step would be a short course to make schoolchildren aware of TA and games, so that this awareness could percolate through society. This would seem to be a long-term solution, but in historical terms, might have a significant impact after very few generations. Any society can benefit from a greater mindfulness among its citizens.
